every woman on tumblr should have this on their dash

And every man

Look how nobody’s yelling or arguing or making things into a competition. Look how this is to straight up educate people through a different perspective. Look how effective that makes the message.

A 5-Year-Old Worries Voyager Will Get Lonely, Receives Best Answer Ever

ricktimus:

You can hear the whole thing, in which astronaut Chris Hadfield talks to the worried kid, here. “What if something goes wrong and there’s nothing to fix it? What if it gets lost?” are among the questions he asks.

Hadfield says the right question is, “Is Voyager a happy machine or a sad machine?” He grew up on a farm with tractors, and then became a pilot flying planes, and he wants the machines he works with to be happy. To Hadfield, machines are happy when they’re being used, and Voyager is doing a job — it’s out there exploring the universe, and it’s never lonely because it can phone home to tell us what it’s seen.

"It’s the bravest satellite," Hadfield says. "It’s very brave, and very lucky.” And it’s been going for a long time, and “it’s a very tough little spaceship, and it knows what it’s doing.”

"Did you understand what I said?"
"Yes."
"Does it make you happier?"
"Not really."
"Well it’s just sort of part of life, Timor. It’s not really the fact that everything always has a start and an end. It’s what happens in the middle that counts. What do you do while you’re alive. What do you do while you’re laughing. And I think we’re doing exactly what makes Voyager joyful.”

Last year, Richard Blanco made history as the youngest, first openly gay, first immigrant and first Latino person to read a poem at a presidential inauguration. Now, in honor of the 10th anniversary of marriage equality in Massachusetts, he’s written a poem about how far the marriage movement has come. Commissioned by Freedom to Marry, “Until We Could” is an evocative, emotional tribute to the loves that came before us and those that will come after. I don’t even have to tell you I’m crying. I know you know. (via the Daily Beast)

Feminism is not about who opens the jar.

It is not about who pays for the date. It is not about who moves the couch. It is not about who kills the bugs. It is not about who cooks the dinner. It’s not even about who stays home with the kids, as long as the decision was made together, after thinking carefully about your situation and coming to an agreement that makes sense for your particular marriage and family.

It is about making sure that nobody ever has to do anything by “default” because of their gender. The stronger person should move the couch. The person who enjoys cooking more, has more time for it, and/or is better at it should do the cooking. Sometimes the stronger person is male, sometimes not. Sometimes the person who is best suited for cooking is female, sometimes not. You should do what works.

But it is also about letting people know that it is okay to change. If you’re a woman who wants to become stronger, that’s great. If you’re a man who wants to learn how to cook, that’s also great. You might start out with a relationship where the guy opens all the jars and the girl cooks all the meals, but you might find that you want to try something else. So try it.
